Today we'll be taking a look at IconBuddy, which is the ultimate source for icons. They purchased a SEO roast from us and they were the second customer. I'm really excited to take a look at this and seeing anything that we can find and improve. The IconBuddy is the ultimate source for icons. They have a huge library of icons. From here we see it's 226,000. So it's a huge amount. It's a lot to filter through and they have a lot of potential for a lot of programmatic SEO pages and a lot of content. What people can do is they can install IconBuddy as a Figma plugin so that they have all of these icons immediately in Figma. Otherwise they can include them in the VS Code editor so that it improves and you can import all of your assets easily by looking here and being able to copy over the SVG. So this really helps development a lot because what I do often is really going on these websites and then opening up Lucida or heroicons.com, copying over the SVG and it's a slow process. So having this in the editor is a really helpful thing. The lifetime access for this is $89 and then you get a lifetime description which includes the plugin access, VS Code extension. You can save, generate and do more stuff. They have a lot of free tools as well. They can create blog thumbnails, SVG to PNG conversion to JPEG, Base64, Ico, JSX and so on. So it's a huge market. There's a lot of potential here and there's a lot of helpful tools for developers specifically. And they seem to be focused on this just because they have all of these icons on the top such as heroicons and flat UI icons and Noto emojis and so on. Let's take a look at the Ahrefs dashboard to see what we're working with. They have a lot of backlinks already and it has a decent domain rating and they have some search. It's growing. They started about in March and April and they seem to be ranking quite well. So it's nice to see them grow. It's exciting. It's interesting to see what the potential could be and I'm curious about how much MRR they're making but maybe we will never know. The top keyword for the homepage which is like your brand homepage is open source icons. They're ranking number 40 for this. This seems to be very relevant to them and they also have a strong brand. IconBuddy people look for this about 1,300 searches per month and they have everything covered. So it's super unique. They have the Figma link here. They have the DevHunt, Visual Studio Marketplace, Greater Supply, Hacker News, Product Hunt, LinkedIn and so on. So that is very good to see. It's nice to have a strong brand because you will be the only one covering this keyword and it's a very strong signal that you're a real business and not some random website. But being able to rank well for your primary keyword that is a bit more broader, for example, free SVG icons or open source icons is also a very powerful thing because that is your category of tool. And you'll see a bunch of competitors here and the keyword difficulty seems to be high as well as the search volume, about 700 to 3,000 in the USA and you'll see a bunch of competitors. I'm not sure which one is better but let's go with free SVG icons just because we have a stronger keyword difficulty. Let's keep that for later and first take a look at the top pages that we have for this website. The other top pages here are now, for example, icons. Like this one, you can download the SVG, the PNG, you have the images and a few image examples. If we take a look at this search only, we will see a bunch of these images as well. Here is an image from Medium, Pado, GitHub and so on. And let's see if we find our target, which is IconBuddy. Actually, Iconify is ranking higher here, GitHub is ranking higher and here we see the R-Code CD SVG icon and it has a smaller meta description if we compare it to some other ones. Yeah, here we have a better description potentially but this one includes download, copy and paste the SVG and transparent PNG icons for your project. Here, our meta description is free icon by dev icon downloads. Maybe we can include something in the meta description. Over here, maybe we can include something like download, copy and paste and then maybe include a little bit more about the icon. Maybe it doesn't have to be SVG only because you do have different types. You have SVG, PNG, JSTACK and Base64. So maybe we don't really need to include this in the title and we can skip potentially also the brand name here. The headings seem to be a bit off. The H1 should be here as the H1 because this is the most important title in the pig. This is a H2, icons in action. I would call this icon examples or R-Code CD icon examples as a better H2. And the other ones you can remove. H5 doesn't really make sense. So move this from H4 to HH2 and make an icons in action. The other things are canonical layout seems to be set. The restructured data is missing. So that is important to include here in the image search because you will be able to show up in the image search. The OG URL is wrong. It should be the same as the canonical URL here and it should match ideally because that is the image that you want to display. The OG image here, it's the default banner. And I would definitely change this to something a bit more unique to this icon that you're showing because here in Google, you can see that is the icon that is being displayed. But actually we want to make sure that we cover user intent. And we see here for that icons.dev, they show this specific icon over here in the OG URL. And this will really match and improve your position on this page because Google knows that it's extra relevant and it's extra unique. And it will understand more about what your page is about by using the OG URL and the OG image, make them more correct and make them match everything else. The structured data is very important. As an example, let me show you one website that I created earlier and it's GradientPay. If we take a look at the search results here, we'll see that gradient page is being shown here for the image. So it's showing this pack of images first before all the other content. And having this position is very important because it's actually a lot higher than the native websites, like especially with one and two, three big pixels, autumn gradients, and some other examples. And then at number 12, it's only us as a website, GradientPay. But however, we do rank for the images here. And this image search is giving us a lot of traffic. And that's very important to optimize because a lot of people, if they're looking for an icon, they will do an image search immediately. And here we see the gradient page is ranking number one on the image search specifically. And that is because we optimized the OG images for all of these packs. They will have structured data on everything. And that is very helpful for Google to understand what your website is about. The way that we implemented this is by using metadata. You can take a look at here, for example, and somewhere we'll be able to find this content. For example, you have good alt tags and you have, for example, good images of all the correct item scope, item type, image object, and so on. And then we have a class hidden, which includes the content area, the license, the acquired license page, the creator, schema, and so on. So this schema is very important for making your images rank a little bit higher in Google. And it is some type of technical SEO that maybe not all people know about. So the way that you do this is you do a search for image structure data. Take a look at the Google for Developers and do explain a little bit more and include all the ways that you include, you can include this structure data. The way that I did this is by using microdata. And then it's a simple few attributes such as item scope, item type, and adding the item props in this way. You can just use meta tags here specifically in the text and use some type of a class hidden to make sure that this is included, but maybe it's not included in your page. Otherwise, you can use a simple JSON-LD. You can include this in Next.js or any other type of page that you would have. And this also is a possibility. It just sends a little bit more data over, but it's easier to find this and it's easier to detect this with tools. So that's why the HSTL toolbar is not showing this. But it's very important still to make sure that the org image and org URL is set. And I think for technical SEO, that will really boost everything on your website. So 100% make sure that this is correct. And either you rank here higher on this page specifically because it can include the PNG icons and SVG, but also be shown here in the images specifically. So make sure that this is correct. And this will improve the ranking for all of your pages, the icon logos, simple icons, and so on. So that is super important to get right. We will maybe take a look at Revit MQ icon. And we see that here we see some competitors, for example, icon duck being shown here in the website and also here in the images. And the image search, we also see icon duck is showing up. And they have this position covered. And a few things that I saw that are a little bit different in your website compared to your competitors. Here, for example, you have more of a widescreen icon versus a square icon as a logo. And this is something that other people might prefer, but also you have a few things of damage in action. But this is not ideal, right? It is super small and people will not be able to see it. And it doesn't really help you rank that much. It would be better to include like widescreen or square variants, and it will really help you. But one thing that I saw, they have similar icons and illustrations. So they have different types of icons over here. And they do include the slug in this way. And you can click through and open different variations of this icon. And that is something that you don't really have. So if you have, they could have included like a widescreen example. And they also include some icon details. You can potentially generate this with AI in bulk or make some type of programmatic SEO keyword insertion. So say like open source icon is named this, it's licensed under this, it's available in CSVG and PNG in these sizes. You have also this, but it's a little bit different and it's not text. So Google has potentially some difficulty in understanding this. And it's especially important to include the date. Dates are very important. And some use cases related to tags. Thumbnail previews of all sizes so that Google also can optimize their specific images. They even have an FAQ for all these icons. And they have a better internal linking structure where they show related icons and illustrations to different types of icon sets and so on. So they have at least like a hundred different links or internal links throughout their website. So if this page has specifically a high amount of ranking or backlinks, it will spread out the link juice to everywhere on their website. However, for you, you don't really have this related icon sets or packs or similar examples. So this is really something that you need to improve. And this will be super, super important. If there's one thing that I would try to do is fix the technical SEO, make sure you have these pages all set up. If we take one thing that we can finish off with is by checking the competitive analysis and opening up your domain and seeing what we can improve for compared to your competitors. So for example, we saw icon doc earlier. Let's include them over here and see what they are doing right. We can do also a quick scan first of their top pages and how they rank. They are also decently growing, but they have 400,000 traffic while you have only 300. So you can definitely 400X your traffic over time. They are ranking for WhatsApp logo, Apple logo, emoji, Instagram logo. And all of these have a huge amount of volume. So WhatsApp logo, 3 million people are looking for this for some reason. Okay. They also have emojis specifically that people search for, which I didn't know actually could be a keyword. So having some types of emojis would be very important as well because you can have different types of icon and include a lot of this text. So that seems like a huge amount of SEO traffic that you could cover just by making a page for every emoji that exists. Covering all of these specific variants that you also might have, Apple logo, emoji, and different icons and different tags and different sets. This will be also very helpful for users, but also for Google and SEO. And maybe check who else is ranking for, example, for Spotify logo. You might see, okay, it's IconDuck first, but who else is here? Or branding, faces, Vecteezy. So they are more of a vector tool. So they have different types of icons and logos as well. Let's take a look at maybe if they have some icons. For example, just, oh, we see IconDuck also first here. And as you can see, they're really getting a lot of traffic just from Google search and images over here. Or a vector logo, let's take a look here and include it into our competitive analysis as well. Iconify design, let's remove this one and take a look at the keyword competitors for you. So they, Vecteezy is ranking for wallpaper HD, but maybe we need to take a look if at least two competitors are ranking for anything to include it to make sure that it's even more relevant and so on, because this amount is 230,000 searches, that's quite a lot and it might not be always relevant. So here we have a huge list, that's the Instagram logo, WhatsApp icon. They have a huge amount of volume. So that is something that you want to prioritize. I will include this list as an exploit into your audit. So you can take a look at this competitor result and this might be very helpful for you. But I won't go through everything here, but it is a very good amount of things to check out to see if you can add more content here. And the link intersect, let's take a look. They have a lot of links from all of your competitors, except you have a lot of links from Team Forest, Behance, Dribbble, Bing, and so on. I will include a small exploit as well, maybe just the first 1,000. And that's something that you can see if you will be able to include your website in one of these lists. One way that you can go through here is take a look at the Team Forest, for example, where do they get links from? And for example, here they say, okay, it's three icons by icon duck. And that is something maybe that you can also do in some way like this. This is not done overnight, but if you're building a brand for the longterm, that is something that you want to focus on for the future. I will include all of this stuff in the audit. So take a look at the full blog post in the description and this should be covered. And hopefully all of this information helps you. To recap, make sure that your technical SEO is correct. Include the OG image for your icon, add more related icons, improve the internal links, and spread the link juice from everywhere. And this will really help you in SEO. Focus on more icons from the competitor gap that your competitors are ranking for. And yeah, just keep building. It looks really good. Hopefully you'll get a lot more traffic from this and I hope this helps. Thank you.

With a library of over 226,000 icons and plugins for Figma and VS Code, IconBuddy has huge potential to drive traffic and revenue from search engines.
However, our audit uncovered several areas to improve their on-page SEO, technical optimizations, and content gaps compared to top competitors.
By implementing the action items from this teardown, IconBuddy could 400X their organic traffic from Google Search and Image Search. Let's get started!
Traffic Overview
IconBuddy's search traffic has been steadily growing since March 2024, now reaching over 300 organic visitors per month. Their top ranking keywords include:
open source icons
free svg icons
[icon name] svg
While this is a great start, there is massive upside potential by expanding their keyword footprint and optimizing for Google Image Search (more on this later).
On-Page SEO
For IconBuddy's key landing pages like individual icon pages, we recommend the following on-page optimizations:
Alternatively, you can use RDFa or Microdata formats. The key is to provide search engines with more context about your icon images in a structured way.
Competitor Analysis
Looking at IconBuddy's top organic competitors, we see sites like:
IconDuck
Iconify
Icons8
Flaticon
What are they doing well?
Keyword-rich pages: Competitors have dedicated pages targeting high-volume keywords like "WhatsApp icon", "Instagram logo", "emoji icons" etc.
Related icons: On each icon page, they display a grid of dozens of related/similar icons to improve engagement and internal linking.
Image optimization: Competitor icons rank highly in Google Image Search due to filenames, alt text, structured data, and compression.
Categorization: Icon sets are well-organized into intuitive categories and tags, creating a strong site architecture.
To help close the gap, we exported two key reports from Ahrefs:
Keyword Gap: 500+ keywords that competitors rank for, but IconBuddy doesn't. Priority opportunities to create new pages.
Backlink Gap: 1000+ domains that link to competitors, but not IconBuddy. Outreach targets for link building.
